Christmas was observed in the Colonies but not in the way we have come to expect in modern times. Christmas trees and present-giving were unheard of although many families and neighbors gathered socially in late December. Crops were harvested, and foods grown on the plantation were processed and preserved for the season. To brighten up the long dark days, everygreen boughs were brought into the house and draped around doorways and window, along railings, and on tables covered with plentiful food, desserts, and special treats.
