Wed|October 5, 2016 5:00 - 9:00 PM o The 5th Latin American Art Biennial, a borough-wide exhibition of more than 100 Latin American artists living in the New York metropolitan area as well as abroad. Opening on September 19 and running until December 7, with an opening reception / Bronx Culture Trolley taking place on Wednesday, October 5, 5 PM to 9 PM, the Longwood exhibit will feature twelve acclaimed Latin American artists in a variety of media. Artists Include: Liliana Avalos (Peru), Williams Carmona (Cuba), Scherezade García (Dominican Republic), Sandra Mack-Valencia (Colombia), Patrick McGrath Muñiz (Puerto Rico), Elsa María Meléndez (Puerto Rico), José Morales (Puerto Rico), Clara Morera (Cuba), Freddy Rodríguez (Dominican Republic), Nancy Saleme (Venezuela), Juan Sánchez (Puerto Rico), and Ezequiel Taveras (Dominican Republic). Utilizing the theme of "I am one of those people that…," the Biennial exhibits offer an evolution of styles and techniques practiced by contemporary Latin American artists and engage personal aspects of the artists' philosophy and creation process as well as social issues including migration, women's rights, political conflicts, and discrimination. Curated by Alexis Mendoza and Luis Stephenberg, the exhibition reveals the complex and diverse approaches of Latin American artists living inside and outside the United States. According to Stephenberg, "it is through our work as Latin American artists, regardless of where we are living, that we are able to find traits of our own existence." In addition to Longwood Art Gallery @ Hostos, participating galleries for the Bronx Latin American Art Biennial include: BronxArtSpace, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, The Clemente (Manhattan), The Andrew Freedman Home, the Gilbert Pavilion Gallery at The Hebrew Home at Riverdale, the Loisaida Center (Manhattan), and the Poe Park Visitor Center Gallery.
