Fwd: MTA: Fix the 149th Street-Grand Concourse elevator

Dear The Bronx MoveOn member,

I'm Enrique, a MoveOn member, and I started a petition to MTA Chairman Thomas F. Prendergast, which says:

We, the concerned citizens of New York state, want to ensure that senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and mothers with small children have vital elevator service provided again at the E. 149th St. & Grand Concourse train station hub in the Bronx, New York.

We are starting this petition to continue to push the MTA to restore elevator service for our senior citizens, disabled persons, and mothers with baby strollers at the E. 149th St. & Grand Concourse train station hub (2, 4, and 5 lines).

This South Bronx community has suffered over 30 years without having this vital elevator service repaired. There are also several institutions in this community that are directly affected, including Michelangelo Apartments, Hostos Community College, Lincoln Hospital, the 149th Street General Post Office, and Pregones Theatre. Please sign the petition to tell MTA to restore elevator service at our train hub.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

–Enrique

This petition was created on MoveOn's online petition site, where anyone can start their own online petitions. Enrique didn't pay us to send this email—we never rent or sell the MoveOn.org list.

7 FREE HELP LINES AVAILABLE TO HELP AFRICAN-AMERICAN FAMILIES WITH MONEY TROUBLES

– As a public benefit, CareConnect USA has published several toll-free help lines for families seeking financial assistance. --

Waxhaw, NC (BlackNews.com) – When a household relies on two paychecks, budgets are strained if one job is lost. In cases like this, a family can tread water for a time. But as they struggle to find work, many will fall into troubling debt. Fortunately, more households are finding lifelines for help.

Since 2009, phone calls to financial help lines have risen 10% per year. As a public benefit, CareConnect USA publishes help lines for families seeking financial assistance. According to national director David Moakler, awareness is the key. “Although we are pleased that more people have learned about programs to ease their money troubles, the sad news is that the need for such help continues to grow.” The national rise in calls to the help lines has been especially strong from African-American regions.

Government agencies and non-profit outreach centers provide free advice and numerous services within the CareConnect USA network. In their effort to increase awareness, the group distributes free help line posters to 150,000 workplaces, 3200 job centers, and reference tools for social workers annually. They authorize the information below to be published on websites and resource pages where appropriate.

Lucrecia Novoa is an artist and cultural educator who uses a combination of masks, costumes, storytelling and dance to interpret the folk traditions of many cultures. She believes that art education must be strong component of our children's lives, feeling that they need to be motivated not only at an intellectual level but should also receive tools that enhance their creative minds and personal talents. Lucrecia studied Fine Arts in University of Chile and the Massachusetts College of Arts. The turning point of her career was when she attended the Art of the Mask course offered by Eric Bornstein in 1996. Under Eric's patient guidance, she learned not only techniques of mask masking, but also how to mold gestures and expressions into the masks. She began producing fantasy creatures using large masks and sophisticated costumes and soon sought her own characters, based preferentially on dark figures representing witches, monsters and ghosts. Over the years, Lucrecia has been involved in several workshops, shows and theater. She has organized her own workshops and exhibits over the last few years. Of particular significance were the exhibits in the Waltham Public Library which displayed my drawings, paintings, and masks in three consecutive years.

Fwd: A win in the fight against Stop-and-Frisk

We just won a big victory in New York against Stop-and-Frisk Stop-and-Frisk Rally

Chip in $5 today to support the movement to hold police accountable.

Contribute

Dear Cinquez,

We're writing to share some good news — New York City will finally begin reforming its stop-and-frisk program.

Newly-elected Mayor Bill de Blasio has announced that he has reached an agreement with our friends at the Center for Constitutional Rights to appoint a monitor to oversee reforms to the NYPD's program of aggressive, baseless stops of Black and brown New Yorkers.

We fought hard for this. Together with our partners across New York City, thousands of us signed petitions, made phone calls, and rallied at the steps of City Hall to call for an overhaul of stop-and-frisk.

This is a big step forward. But we can't stop now — we have to keep organizing to hold the police accountable in New York City and across the country.

Can you chip in $5 to sustain our work to challenge stop-and-frisk and other discriminatory policing practices?

It's taken years of tireless organizing to win these reforms of the NYPD, and we will continue to work with partners to monitor progress. It demonstrates that when we come together as a community to speak out against injustices like stop-and-frisk, we can win.

Police departments across the country have relied on violence and racial profiling to target and harass our communities for far too long.

That's why we have to use every means possible to challenge police abuse.

From rallying around individuals like Darrin Manning, a 16-year-old in Philadelphia who was stopped and frisked by the police so aggressively that his genitals were injured; to advocating for legislative change; to developing innovative new tools like CopWatchNYC.org to help New Yorkers safely and lawfully observe, record and report police officers, we will keep fighting — but we need your support.

Please chip in $5 to support the movement to hold the police accountable.

Thanks and Peace,

--Rashad, Matt, Arisha, Aimée, Johnny and the rest of the ColorOfChange team.

Fw: Tell DMX: don't let Zimmerman keep victimizing Trayvon

ednesday — had his life not been violently cut short by George Zimmerman — Trayvon Martin would have celebrated his 19th birthday.
On what would have been Trayvon's 19th birthday, George Zimmerman inked a deal to profit from his murder.

Trayvon Martin memorial

Demand cancellation of Zimmerman's "celebrity" boxing match now:

Take Action

Dear Friend,

On Wednesday — had his life not been violently cut short by George Zimmerman — Trayvon Martin would have celebrated his 19th birthday. Instead, the day was marked by a grotesque new low in the killer's continuing efforts to capitalize on his infamy: the announcement that Zimmerman will face rapper DMX in a pay-per-view, "celebrity" boxing match to be broadcast online.1

Fight promoter and professional con man Damon Feldman is enabling Zimmerman to further victimize a dead young Black man for personal gain, cynically declaring that this exploitative commercial spectacle will substitute as "justice" for Trayvon.2 Real justice was denied by Florida's gun-lobby-written "Shoot First" law and broken court system3 — and we do not honor Trayvon's memory with more violence.

We certainly don't honor his memory by feeding into the stereotype of Black men as violent and belligerent that empowered George Zimmerman to take Trayvon's life without consequence.

The fight's details are set to be announced at a press conference this coming Wednesday, but DMX hasn't finalized his contract and corporate sponsors have yet to sign on. Please join us in urging DMX to do the right thing and pull out of this shameful stunt now.

Feldman, who lost his promoter's license — and was banned from promoting fights in his native Pennsylvania after admitting to court investigators that 95 percent of his matches were rigged4,5 — stands to profit handsomely from a fake fight designed to make money off anti-Black sentiment as much as from those of us outraged by Zimmerman's murder acquittal.

And Zimmerman's bizarre eagerness to fight a Black man, the more high-profile the better — in a fit of dissociation, Zimmerman announced on Monday he'd like to fight Kanye West because he "attack[s] defenseless people"6makes a mockery of his criminal defense claim that he feared for his life in a struggle with an unarmed 17-year-old boy. Indulging Zimmerman in his monstrous fantasy recreation of that night — at 5'11", DMX is ironically Trayvon's exact height, of which Zimmerman's defense team made significant issue at trial7 — serves no actual purpose beyond driving money and attention to a violent sociopath and his bottom-feeder promoter.

Rather than giving Zimmerman and his legions of racist supporters what they want, let's honor Trayvon's memory — and prevent future tragedies like his — by demanding a justice system that values and protects Black lives. Let's rid this nation of anti-Black policies like Shoot First and Stop-and-Frisk, and demand better of a media industry that demonizes Black men and boys, perpetuating the dangerous perception by people like George Zimmerman that violence against us is acceptable and necessary.8

Please take a moment to let DMX — and anyone else who might consider stepping in to fill his shoes — know that we're looking to him to do the right thing for all the other Trayvons in our lives that we can't bear to lose. Urge DMX to cancel the fight now.

Thanks and Peace,
