The Bronx River Is Almost As Gross As Gowanus

The only freshwater river in New York gets so choked with fecal matter during rainstorms that its toxicity rivals Brooklyn's Gowanus Canal, a federal Superfund site. The New York City Water Trail Association has been testing the river since May, and found its levels of fecal bacteria jump thirteen-fold during heavy rains. "Stuff is just ending up in the river without being treated and there is no way of knowing right now where it's coming from," one water tester said. This might help explain things.
