Fw: Daily Plant: Concrete Plant Park Honored With Design Award
| Volume XXVI, Number 5399 Tuesday, April 26, 2011 Concrete Plant Park Honored With Design Award Concrete Plant Park; Photo by Malcolm Pinckney At an awards ceremony held on March 22 at the Federal Hall National Memorial, Parks received a 2010 "Designing the Parks" Merit Award in the Site Design category for the design of Concrete Plant Park in the Bronx. Concrete Plant Park, which opened in Fall 2009, was designed by Jim Mituzas, RLA, Senior Designer for the Bronx Capital Team along with an extensive design support team at Capital. Designing the Parks is a public-private partnership consisting of eight diverse organizations committed to sustaining healthy, lively public parks as a core of civic life. Embodied in this vision is a framework for planning and designing public parks that are innovative, responsive, respectful, sustainable and inclusive. This structure is composed of six guiding principles which were developed through a dynamic interactive process, including reverence for place, engagement of all people, expansion beyond traditional boundaries, advancement of sustainability, informed decision making, and an integrated research, planning, design and review process. Members of Designing the Parks include the National Park Service, the Cultural Landscape Foundation, University of Virginia, Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, Institute at the Golden Gate, George Wright Society, National Parks Conservation Association, and the Val Alen Institute. This year marks the inaugural year of the Designing the Parks awards program. In total, 69 entries were received, spanning 20 states and five countries. Of these entries, nine honor and eight merit awards were selected. These awards were given to projects that represent an outstanding design that exemplifies the Designing the Parks design principles. A capstone project for the development of the Bronx River Greenway, Concrete Plant Park once housed a concrete batch mix plant located on the western bank of the industrial southern section of the Bronx River. In close partnership with community organizations and public agencies, the Parks Department and the Bronx River Alliance began the revitalization of this formerly abandoned site through reestablishing salt marshes on the riverbank once strewn with trash and tires, reintroducing the public to the site through organizing community festivals and leading hundreds of residents out on the Bronx river to canoe and kayak. The following are some of the Jurors comments on Concrete Plant Park: "This has a fantastic story... celebrating their past [rather than demolishing it] and making it whimsical by painting the buildings pink." "The idea that the Bronx River would have a promenade is a fantastic recognition of this community. You feel this had to be an immense public movement to get made." "... it looks natural and magical." "Incredible to see what's happened in New York in the last 10 yearsthey are at the forefront of place-making in the country." Congratulations to everyone on the design and construction team for receiving this honor! | ||

Afrika Owes Celebrates Easter and Freedom with Church
The teen said she was grateful for God and her church Abyssinian Baptist posted $25,000 in cash to bail her out of jail.

HARLEM — She has a lot to be grateful for.
Afrika Owes, the former prep-school student charged with ferrying guns for a Harlem street gang, returned home to the church that secured her freedom Easter Sunday.
Walking out of Abyssinian Baptist Church after attending two morning services, 17-year-old Owes, who wasreleased from jail last week after the church posted her $25,000 bail, said she was happy to be back.
"I'm grateful for God and my church," said Owes, a former student at Massachusetts' prestigious Deerfield Academy who used to sing in the church's children's choir.
The church, where Owes and her mother are still members, has stood by the teenager since her arrest for allegedly holding guns for the "2 Mafia Family" and "Goons on Deck" street gangs in February.
Abyssinian representatives first tried to bail Owes in March, but had to wait for Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Edward McLaughlin to make a decision after he expressed concern that they were using "money off a collection plate."
Along with the outspoken support of the church's pastor, Rev. Calvin Butts, who preached about Owes in a sermon, Rep. Charles Rangel called for the teen's release and said that she shouldn't be treated as a hardened criminal.
Back in Harlem, church members shouted "welcome home" to Owes as she greeted her fellow parishioners Sunday.
Wearing an all-white Easter Sunday suit and holding a bible, Owes said the happiness of being back home was visible on her face.
"You can quote me for my smile," she said.

The Black Eyed Peas To Start Music Academy In NYC
NEW YORK — The Black Eyed Peas are opening a school where local teenagers will learn video and music production using professional-quality equipment.
The six-time Grammy Award winners announced Tuesday that their Peapod Foundation together with the Adobe Foundation will open a Peapod Adobe Youth Voices music and multimedia academy in lower Manhattan.
The Peapod Foundation is the hip-hop group’s charitable organization; it’s administered by the Entertainment Industry Foundation. The Adobe Foundation is the philanthropic arm of software maker Adobe Systems Inc., whose products include Acrobat, Flash and Photoshop. The two foundations already run three Youth Voices academies in California – in Los Angeles, Oakland and Redwood City.
The New York academy will offer classes to students ages 13 to 19 starting this July, the foundations said.
“Our passion for music and media was fueled by many generous people on our road to success,” Black Eyed Peas rapper will.i.am said. “Expanding the network of Peapod Adobe Youth Voices academies enables us to pay it forward, giving more youth the skills and encouragement they need to realize their dreams.”
The academy will be housed in a facility operated by Urban Arts Partnership, which runs after-school arts programs for teens who attend high-poverty schools.
Students will be accepted into the academy based on recommendations from teachers and demonstrated interests in subject areas such as camera work, editing and graphic design.
